Further discussion on linear production functions and DEA

چکیده
The purpose of the current paper is to clarify the misunderstanding in using the constant returns to scale (CRS) model in data envelopment analysis (DEA) to estimate returns to scale (RTS) classi®cation. By illustrating the following two dierent assumptions: (a) all decision making units (DMUs) are assumed to be compared to a CRS frontier in the CCR model, i.e., all DMUs are assumed to be capable of operating under CRS and (b) all DMUs exhibit CRS, several incorrect points about RTS estimation raised by Chang, K.P. and Guh, Y.Y. (1991) (European Journal of Operational Research 52, 215±223) and Chang. K.P. (1997) (European Journal of Operational Research 97, 597±599) are examined. It is shown that the assumption (a) does not mean that the RTS classi®cation cannot be estimated. The CRS frontier assumption cannot change the RTS nature of each DMU. Since the CCR model mixes a technical eciency and a scale eciency, it is possible and meaningful to use the CCR results to determine the RTS classi®cation. Finally, the infeasibility of Chang and Guh's (1991) treatment of non-archimedean in®nitesimal is discussed. Ó 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Quadratic Data Envelopment Analysis
Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) provides means for piecewise linear approximation of production functions. To improve the fit to the data we propose to improve the flexibility of the frontier by extending DEA towards a more general piecewise quadratic approximation, called Quadratic Data Envelopment Analysis (QDEA). In contrast to the linear approximation, the quadratic approximation allows for...
متن کاملStatistical Tests Based on Dea Efficiency Scores
This chapter is written for analysts and researchers who may use Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to statistically evaluate hypotheses about characteristics of production correspondences and factors affecting productivity. Contrary to some characterizations, it is shown that DEA is a full-fledged statistical methodology, based on the characterization of DMU efficiency as a stochastic variable. T...
متن کاملThe effects of veterinary services on technical efficiency of dairy farms in Iran: a DEA approach
The aim of this study is to investigate the context by which veterinary services may affect technical efficiency (TE) of Iranian dairy farms. A data envelopment analysis (DEA) was applied to a random sample of 840 dairy farms from six provinces across Iran to estimate regional frontier and metafrontier production functions and also to calculate corresponding TE of these farms. The relationship ...
متن کاملProfit Efficiency Analysis under Limited Information with an Application to German Farm Types
Lack of information about technology and prices often hampers the empirical assessment of the validity of the profit maximization hypothesis. We show that the non-parametric Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) methodology comprises natural tools for dealing with such incomplete information. In particular, we focus on the economic meaning of the DEA model that builds on assumptions of monotone and c...
متن کاملThe relationship between Neural Networks and DEA-R (Case Study: Companies Stock Exchange)
Evaluate the performance of companies on the Stock Exchange using non-parametric methods is very important. DEA and DEA-R with the strategies for piecewise linear frontier production function and use of available data, assess the stock company. In this study, using a neural network algorithm DEA and DEA-R is suggested to classify the first companies in the stock exchange; Secondly, using the...
